    Virtual reality

BASF is the world’s largest chemical manufacturer with six subsidiaries and some 4,000 employees in Belgium. Without safety training, entering a process plant – operating at full speed – is like entering a minefield. In addition, it is very expensive to shut down a plant in case of problems. That’s why good safety training is crucial.

Our Solution

Using 360° footage we recreated the environment

From the classroom to the exciting world of virtual reality

In a time before Soulmade, employees were trained in classrooms with slides & powerpoint. They missed tangible examples. It was our mission to make the employees enthusiastic about safety training again. We used a 360° recording full of tubes and reactors, completely risk-free. During this training, employees have to recognise dangerous situations and react to them.

New worlds to explore

Virtual reality is the ultimate instrument for a complete experience. You enter a parallel universe that shows reality, an idea or a dream in an accessible way.

How does it work?

We recreate your ideal world in virtual reality by filming a 360° video on-site or by recreating it in 3D.

BASF Speaking.

"Virtual Reality is closely linked to the world of the new generation. We used Virtual Reality as a means and not as a goal and the format we created can be translated to a lot of work environments. Once again BASF has a safety training which is not only effective, but also innovative and fun."

Interaction in the VR class

It is not our intention to replace the instructor. The virtual class only serves as a tool. That’s why Soulmade created a livestream system where the instructor and students can interact with each other. This way, the instructor can steer the students in the right direction or give feedback. Every new process operator at BASF follows the same training. It is an efficient and time-saving software that was highly innovative back in 2018.

Results

Every process operator who starts at BASF has to go through this training. At the moment they are also looking into expanding this Virtual Reality training to BASF Germany and BASF USA.
This training won an internal award for safety in 2019 and is included in the list of finalists of the Belgium Learning & Development awards in 2020.
